I've heard so many stories in this past month about young people committing suicide because of extreme bullying.  It's a topic that definately can no longer be ignored.  Since many kids aren't extremely open with their parents, how do you know if you're child is being bullied?  What should you do about it?

I'm all over this topic and hate bullies, period. I hate cyberbullies, neighborhood bullies, corporate email bullies (that's when kids who were bullied abuse their power in the workplace). The will always exist, but we we have to learn how to deal with them. Kinda like a virus.

Although many of references I've researched talk to parents, they always talk about how to be aware of the signs and ways to be reactionary, which is all good. But my #1 tip is make sure your child knows that you have their back (support them unconditionally) and that there isn't a bully out there that you and he/she can't defeat together. That confidence alone is more powerful than any bully's venom.

It turns out kids with severe food allergies are targets of bullying because of the food they can and can't eat. A new study found that 35 percent of children with food allergies have been bullied at school for this reason. If your child has food allergies, talk to her as well as her teachers and the principal at school. I did. See: http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/09/28/food.allergy.bullying/
