I'd like to know some realistic techniques for managing anxiety throughout the day. Sometimes everything gets completely overwhelming and I can't manage to prioritize.

Never be afraid to take a mental health day. Sometimes you have to break the monotony and do something for yourself. Maybe shopping, sleeping late, going to lunch with a loved one or friend during their lunch break, watching mindless mid-day television, etc. The work will be there and the one day you take off for your mental health may save you from taking more time off for health reasons.

The holidays are interesting for me because they bring out the best and worst in people. So specifically for the holidays I try to pay attention to my breath. If someone says something that ruffles my feathers I can easily tell when my breath speeds up. So if I observe my reaction, and realize that I don't have to react to that person, and just take a deep breath, then it less stressful. Also, for the holidays it seems everyone is under pressure. So I like to take an attitude of forgiveness to my relations. They may not be aware that they are causing anxiety or stress. So if I am forgiving, then I allow them the space they need to be who they are.

The anxiety/stress that comes with the holidays for me usually stems from a lack of planning. Here are some of my hard-learned tips: Shopping: I've learned over the past few years to start shopping early. If you wait until the last minute to hit the stores, it's stressful on you and your budget. So, I start shopping in mid-October. I buy one gift per paycheck. And, I'm always looking for deals at Target, Ross and other discount stores. Cooking: I'm also the family "cook" for Christmas dinner. I tend to start shopping in advance and I prep as many things as possible. I've learned a few dos and don't on this front. For example, please do not freeze greens. It makes them mushy. So, clean them in advance and put them in a plastic bag with a few paper towel in the bag to soak up any extra moisture. Dressing is always better the next day so you could make it in advance, using chicken stock. Chop any veggies in advance, too. Keep your menu streamlined. There's no need for 20 desserts. Pick two family favorites (sweet potato pie, anyone?) and roll with it. Stay thankful and prayerful: It's very important to remember your blessings and why the holiday season is important. It's all about family and friends for me.

Ahh the holidays are coming, so is my seasonal depression. I think the above is sound advice, whenever you begin to feel blue or are in the midst of it, take a day for yourself and do something you love. It really helps!

I'm actually looking for a good depression counselor for my girlfriend. She's going through a pretty rough time right now. Anyone have a good referral in the San Deigo area?
